The Boat: Fish 'N Ships

Arcturus is a project team at MIT focused on making autonomous boat designs. Fish 'N Ships, this years design, will be competing in Roboboat 2025.

Dovetail Connector

My first contribution to the Arcturus team involved designing a dovetail connector and rotating mechanism to allow the boat to pitch while limiting other motion. This is used for testing the forces the boat undergoes by attaching it to the boat in controlled conditions. The machine this connection attaches to can move up and down freely, which means my design does not need to worry about that.

This design was to be manufactured with 3D printing and therefore precision limitations must be considered. Image 1 depicts my CAD of the connection I need to attach to. Image two depicts the actual connector design. Item number 3 is an exploded view of the design and how it all connects. From the top-down, let's go through the design of image 2. First, we have the piece that connects to the dovetail using a slot mechanism. It then connect to a flattened part of piece two where it can be bolted on. Piece 2 allows for pitch movement and clamps on the end to reduce motion along that axis. Piece 3 mounts to a bar on the boat. It uses drafted edges to snap onto the bar and can then be tightened to ensure minimal play.
